In salt glazing process, the firing temperature is between 1200 °C and 1300 °C. The Kiln must be fired with an open flame. When the highest firing temperature is reached, table salt is introduced into the combustion chamber through various openings. The salt crystals immediately evaporate due to the heat and settle as a so-called “deposit” on the tile surface. The sodium in the table salt acts as a flux and combines with the quartz in the clay to form a silicate. This creates a melt on the surface that gives the tile its characteristic appearance later.
