Sluring a brickwork

The process of sluring a brick wall begins with the preparation of the surface. This includes the removal of dirt and deposits and ensuring that the wall is dry. Then a special slure. Slurry is another type of mortar wash that is done by completely coating the area with a thick layer. Slurry uses the same materials as a German Smear but differs in the application. With a slurry there is full coverage of the masonry producing a stucco-type look but still allows the brick texture to show through.

This slure penetrates the pores of the bricks and forms a protective layer that protects the wall from weather conditions. After the slure is applied, the wall is carefully cleaned to remove excess slure and ensure a clean, uniform appearance. The process of sluring can significantly extend the life of a brick wall and improve its appearance.

The best type of clay brick for slurry, also known as a mortar wash, is one that has a rough texture incrased water absorption (above 12%) and a porous surface. This is because the slurry, a mixture of water and clay, adheres better to these surfaces and penetrates the pores, resulting in a durable and attractive finish.

It’s also important that the bricks are unglazed, as the slurry does not adhere well to glazed bricks. Additionally, the bricks should have a uniform color and texture to ensure a consistent appearance

The sluring process offers several advantages for a brick wall:

Protection: The slure forms a protective layer on the brick wall, protecting it from weather conditions. This can help extend the life of the wall.

Aesthetics: The sluring process can improve the appearance of a brick wall. It gives the wall a clean and uniform appearance.

Care: After the sluring process, the wall is easier to clean and maintain. Conservation: The sluring process can help preserve the historical character of an old brick wall by giving it a well-kept and well-preserved appearance.

Please note that slurry process results in a permanent change to the brick surface. Therefore, it should only be applied if you are certain that it will achieve the desired look. All works should be carried out by a professional to ensure that it is done correctly and safely.
